Guilty Tear Jerk Reasons to Switch to Solar
Here is America’s most famous Indian. If you watched TV during the 70’s, then you saw him in one of the most well known public service announcements of all time, produced by KAB (Keep America Beautiful). There’s nothing like a crying Indian to pull on those guilt strings and try to convince people to see the error of their ways. Except he wasn’t really Indian, he was Italian named Espera Oscar DeCorti. And it wasn’t a real tear, it was glycerine. And that American Indian doo with braids was actually a wig.
What is my point? Those facts being true or not — the message of stopping pollution is still a good message. The items discussed below have controversy — nonetheless solar power overall is still a good message, regardless whether you agree with it all. I actually sat down to write an article containing all the reasons why you should switch to solar power. There were many good reasons — it can save you money, help the environment, create jobs, increase the value of your house, etc. There were also darker, more controversial, tear jerking and guilt smearing reasons which I reserved for this article.
The tone of this article is more tongue-in-cheek. If you are like me, you have an aversion to being scolded by some unknown author from an unknown website regarding your personal life. I’m not here trying to convince you of anything you don’t already know — if you found this website by searching for how to make a solar panel, I would be preaching to the choir anyways. Prepare for your guilt strings to be plucked, imagine a violin begins playing sad music, here are the top 5 guilty-tear-jerking reasons to switch to solar!
1) Health Risks of High Energy Power Lines
Some studies suggest a 70% higher risk of childhood leukemia when living this close to an electric magnetic field. “We found that there was a slight increase in leukemia within 200 meters of one of these power lines. And an even slighter increase within 600 meters,” said lead researcher Gerald Draper from the Childhood Cancer Research Group at the University of Oxford. Other studies have attributed electric magnetic fields to adult leukemia, neurodegenerative diseases, miscarriage and clinical depression. One study even found a doubled risk of Alzheimer’s disease.
For those of you who, like me, do not think in meters — 200 meters is approximately 1/8th of a mile. 600 meters is over a third of a mile. Whether you live within 200 meters of an electric magnetic field or not — someone on your power grid does. Switching to solar power will eliminate your contribution to the problems these people are facing. You may consider the amount of energy you use from the grid insignificant, and that removing your home from the power grid will not have a noticeable affect on these families. However, you could say the same thing with global warming and CO2 production — no matter what you do individually it will not seem like it is a big difference. It is only when it becomes a movement of tens of thousands of homes before a noticeable change will take place.
2) Wars over Oil
From Alan Greenspan’s book, “The Age of Turbulence”, this famous quote has emerged: “I am saddened that it is politically inconvenient to acknowledge what everyone knows: the Iraq war is largely about oil.” Most people are not surprised by the concept. Whatever your view on the war in the Middle East, all should agree that it would be far less convoluted if the issue of dependence on foreign oil did not exist.
Going green and converting to alternative, renewable energy such as solar power is an excellent way to cut our dependence on foreign oil. Whether or not dependence on foreign oil causes wars or only causes deficits, it is still a good idea to switch to solar panels and become more independent, both as a nation as well as your own freedom from reliance upon the grid.
3) Disasters from Shipping and Drilling for Oil
In 2010, the BP Gulf of Mexico oil spill dumped an approximate 4.9 million barrels of crude oil into the ocean. In 1989, the Exxon Valdez oil tanker ran struck a reef and dumped up to 3/4 of a million barrels of oil into the ocean. Over the years, there have been many accidents resulting in hundreds of millions of gallons of crude oil and gas dumped within the oceans.
With as large as the BP oil spill was, did you know it doesn’t even come close to the largest volumes of oil spilled in recent history? In fact there are many large oil spills you may have never heard of, following is a list of some of the largest oil spills in recent history.
- Kuwait Oil Fires in 1991: 1 to 1.5 TRILLION BARRELS of oil. Yes you read that right — 1,000,000,000 to 1,500,000,000 barrels of oil (42 to 63 trillion gallons).
- Kuwait Oil Lakes in 1991: 25 to 50 million barrels of oil
- Gulf War Oil Spill Kuwait 1991 (Iraq, Persian Gulf and Kuwait): 6 to 8 million barrels of oil
- BP Gulf of Mexico “Deepwater Horizon” Oil Spill: 4.9 million barrels
I could go on and on, but I think you get the point. Furthermore, the Exxon Valdez “only” dropped 3/4 of a million barrels of oil into the ocean — a paltry sum when compared to 1.5 trillion lost in the Gulf War (sarcasm).
My point is this — there a lot of oil pollution entering our environment from spills, drilling and wars. If we were less oil dependent as a nation, then there would not be as much of a need to transport this volume of oil, resulting in fewer accidents, and less reasons to go to war where the destruction of oil fields is done on purpose. Solar energy does not contain this risk, once set up the energy comes free right to your home with no danger to the environment.
4) Oil Means Deficit Spending
When you consume oil, you empower nations that — for the most part — do not like us very much. In 2007, we had a $711.6 billion deficit fueled by high oil prices. The most simplistic way of looking at this — lets say your brother paints for a living. Your brother does a fine job when he paints. Your brother is struggling, he hasn’t had work in months. You like your brother. You need your house painted. Do you a) keep your money in the family by hiring your brother to do the job — or b) find a complete stranger to paint your house? The answer is obvious — you would have your brother do it. When the US shells out billions of dollars to purchase oil from the Middle East — it is like hiring the stranger to paint your house. Solar energy creates high paying local jobs, and jobs within the US. A healthy percentage of solar technology is produced in the US, while all of the skilled labor necessary to install solar panels properly resides in the US. (The US is the fifth largest producer of solar technology, beneath China #1, Japan #2, Taiwan #3 and Germany #4.)
Our economy is suffering pretty bad right now. There is a reason why many families are losing their homes and it is so difficult to find quality, high paying jobs. There is a reason why factories are closing down and jobs are being shipped overseas. Spending money that mostly ends up in the hands of your fellow countrymen is much better than into the hands of oil-rich countries who are already wealthy beyond our wildest dreams.
5) Do It For The Children
Burning fossil fuels is claimed by many experts to increase the CO2 in the atmosphere which, as a greenhouse gas, is attributed to global warming and the melting of the icecaps. Whether you believe that, or simply believe that smog in your city may be reduced if you switch from fossil fuel energy consumption to solar energy, either way it is a good idea right?
Massive oil spills, disaster to the environment, global warming, saving our economy and avoiding pointless wars are a few compelling reasons to switch to solar energy. Many of these issues bring controversy, but even if you did not believe any of it — solar panels are an excellent investment that will pay for themselves quickly and increase the value of your home. Buy solar panels today — do it for our children!
Homemade Solar Panels
If you want to make your own solar panels — we have an excellent guide to recommend. It contains all the video tutorials, color diagrams, blueprints and step-by-step instructions you need to make your own solar panel. It comes with an unconditional two month guarantee. If you are serious about installing solar panels and want to learn exactly what it will take, you have nothing to lose.

I’ve had two clients do solar panel installations on their homes. It was costly to install however both clients are benefiting substantially. Neither client is paying a monthly electric bill now, just a minimal fee for the connection. Both are receiving annual checks from the electric company for the extra electricity they generated sold back. The payments have ranged from $6500 to $8000 per year. In 6 to 8 years the solar panels will not only have paid for themselves, but they will be generating income for their households.
Now, I do know the details of the types of solar panels used, or how many you need to fully power a home and generate an annual return from contributing to the grid, but if the ‘tear jerk” reasons weren’t motivational enough to look into it, the possible financial benefits should be!
